Central Opens Fall Tennis Slate In Texas

TYLER, Texas – The University of Central Oklahoma tennis team opened its 2021-22 season this weekend with the Tyler Junior College Invite and saw a dozen singles victories and four more wins in doubles play.

Mae Canete, last season's ITA National Freshman of the Year, began her sophomore campaign on the same note as the Los Angeles, California native went 3-0 to capture the Flight 1 title. She went 21-0 in singles play last season and an unbeaten start to this season reiterated her top notch abilities.

Mae Canete also teamed up with her younger sister Christine Canete in Flight 1 doubles play. The duo won their first two matches to reach the final before a setback left them as runners-up.

Mae won 6-4, 6-2 in the Flight 1 quarterfinals, 6-4, 6-1 in the semis, and 6-3, 6-2 in the Flight 1 final. Christine won her first-ever collegiate match in Flight 2 singles, taking the quarterfinal match 6-2, 2-6 (10-8). She dropped her semifinal match 6-3, 6-4.

As a team, the Canete's won 6-3 in the Flight 1 Doubles quarterfinals before winning 6-1 to reach the final. The pair came up short 6-3 to end the weekend runners-up.

Grace Chadick also reached the final of her flight. The true freshman won 6-4, 6-3 in the Flight 4 quarters before winning 7-5, 7-5 in the semifinals. She lost 6-3, 6-3 in the final.

Central Oklahoma posted its best season ever in 2021, finishing as national semifinalists in the NCAA Division II national tournament. The Bronchos did not play in the non-championship fall segment in 2020 due to the pandemic. The fall season is back and underway in 2021. Central is scheduled to compete again in two weeks at the Cameron Invite in Lawton, Oklahoma.
