Hummingbird Leads Bronchos In Season Opener

Central Finishes Sixth Behind Senior's Performance

SHAWNEE, Okla. – The University of Central Oklahoma cross country team opened the 2021 season Saturday morning with a sixth-place team finish at the Oklahoma Baptist Invitational.

Senior Arizona Hummingbird paced the Bronchos with a fifth-place individual finish. The Wagoner, Oklahoma native, who had her original senior season canceled in 2020, returned for a fifth year and led UCO with a two-mile time of 11:59.03.

Hummingbird led five other Bronchos, all of whom are freshmen.

Bethany Garrison finished 26th with a time of 13:07.61. Clara Shirley took 35th with a time of 13:31.63. And Shiloh Hutchinson finished 39th with a time of 13:41.08. All three checked off their Broncho debuts Saturday morning.

Layne Nichols and Marin Rhodes are also freshmen, although the two were on campus last year when the season was canceled. Nichols finished 45th with a time of 13:51.52 to round out the five-person scoring for the Bronchos, and Rhodes took 56th with a time of 14:31.13.

Central Oklahoma will be off next weekend before traveling to Joplin, Missouri for the Southern Stampede on Sept. 18.
