Central Blanked At Northwest Missouri

MARYVILLE, Mo. – The University of Central Oklahoma football team dropped its third straight game Saturday, falling to Northwest Missouri 38-0 at Bearcat Stadium in MIAA play.

UCO is 1-3 on the season following the loss. Central is back home in Week 5 and will play Lincoln at 2 p.m. Saturday from Wantland Stadium in Edmond.

"I was proud of our defense for how hard they fought early and kept it close," UCO head coach Nick Bobeck said. "We didn't do enough on offense to give our defense a break. It's really hard on a defense to be on the field as much as we were today."

Central Oklahoma ran 42 plays Saturday versus 81 from Northwest. The Bearcats, with almost double the plays as Central, won the time of possession 38 minutes to 22.

The Broncho offense only managed 118 total yards of offense in the game. Central had 141 yards passing, with Keats Calhoon going 16-for-28 in the game. But UCO finished the game with 14 rushes for -23 yards.

UCO started the game with the ball but punted after short success. On the first defensive possession, the Bronchos got an early boost with a Dylan Buchheit interception.

UCO then forced field goals on each of the next two Bearcat possessions and NWMSU missed them both. Central continued to hold firm and kept Northwest off the scoreboard for the first 27:36 of the game.

Northwest finally scored on a 2-yard touchdown run, then got the ball back and completed a 44-yard hail mary as time expired in the first half to take a 14-0 lead.

The Bearcats played a second half that slowly tightened the grip and worked to control the clock and force their way into another win.

Buchheit led UCO's defense, making a career-high 17 tackles to go with one interception and another pass breakup. He also had one tackle for a loss of four yards. Lamontre Huval added seven tackles. He had an interception in the fourth quarter too but it was called off due to a penalty. Zane Adams made five stops. Jason Harris, Sesi Salt and Robert Fuentes each had a sack in the game. The Bronchos had 10 tackles behind the line of scrimmage on the afternoon.

Calhoon took every snap of the game for the Bronchos Saturday. After missing Week 1 and playing one quarter of Week 2, Calhoon played sparingly in Week 3 before taking the reigns at Northwest. The sixth-year Broncho completed 16 passes to seven different receivers.

Daunte McGee led the way with five catches for 28 yards. Josh Moore made three catches for 48 yards and Jayce Gardner also had three catches for 14 yards. Sherrod Davis added two receptions for 32 yards and Andrew Kelow added one grab for a 9-yard gain.

Central Oklahoma will host Lincoln in Week 5 MIAA play at Wantland Stadium next Saturday. The annual UCO Athletics Hall of Fame Game will kickoff at 2 p.m. The Bronchos are 3-0 all-time against Lincoln and won 63-0 over the Blue Tigers of Jefferson City, Missouri in the most recent meeting in September 2019.
