Versatile Desch Sets The Offense

The 2021 volleyball season is right around the corner for Central Oklahoma and the Bronchos -- who have averaged 26 wins a season over the last seven years – are primed to continue their successful ways.

Today is the last position preview of this year's squad with a look at the setters.

UCO has just two setters on the roster, but one of those is the team's undisputed leader and perhaps the most versatile player in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association.

Junior standout Amanda Desch can virtually do it all on the court. She has the ability to switch between making a set and knocking down a kill – or making a block – on the same rally and has done so throughout her career.

Desch was a second-team All-MIAA selection in 2019 after collecting 635 assists, 359 digs, 247 kills, 54 blocks and 25 service aces while leading NCAA Division II in triple-doubles (double digs in kills, assists and digs) with nine.

Desch continued to prove her value to the team last year when the Bronchos could practice but not play after the 2020 season was canceled by the coronavirus pandemic and then through an unofficial 20-match spring campaign.

Central has very capable back-up assistance in second-year freshman Mallory Hendrix, who could also see action at right-side hitter. She gained valuable experience last year, which should pay big dividends this fall, and will undoubtedly see extensive playing time.

"Amanda is our team captain and really makes the team go," head coach Edgar Miraku said. "She does so much for us, both in a playing and leadership role, and I think she's ready for a big year. Mallory is a serious competitor and has the ability to help us in a lot of different roles."

The Bronchos open the season Sept. 3-4 with four matches at the Southeastern Oklahoma Invitational in Durant. Central opens the home season Sept. 10-11 with the Broncho Invitational.
