Central Ends Arkansas Trip With Win

Bronchos Beat Texas A&M Kingsville 3-1 Saturday In Magnolia

MAGNOLIA, Ark. – Central Oklahoma wrapped up its opening weekend in the Mulerider Volleyball Invitational with a 3-1 victory over Texas A&M Kingsville Saturday.
 
UCO went 3-1 on the week, starting with a victory over host Southern Arkansas on Thursday before splitting Day 2 with a loss to UT Tyler and a win over Arkansas Monticello.
 
"Overall it was a good opening weekend," UCO head volleyball coach Edgar Miraku said. "We are a young team and we're learning with every match. To get three wins down here was good. We just need to try to keep improving with each game."
 
Central Oklahoma will continue a nine-game season-opening road trip with a visit to Oklahoma Baptist on Tuesday, Sept. 1 at 6 p.m. The Bronchos also travel to Denton, Texas for Texas Woman's Volleyfest next weekend.
 
Saturday, UCO needed to come back after a tough, extended 32-30 loss in the first set against Kingsville. The Bronchos were down 6-0 in the opening set but climbed back into point by point, eventually tying the set 23-23 with a late 4-0 rally. It was tied seven more times including 30-30 before Kingsville landed a pair of kills to go ahead 1-0 in the match.
 
But then the Bronchos took over. UCO won 25-23, 25-21, and 25-15 over the next three sets to claim the victory.
 
Caroline Clayton led four UCO players with double digit kills. The sophomore had 15 in the match. Sophomore Georgia Ahlert added 13, freshman Brylee Moore landed 12, and freshman Taylor Fenton posted 10 kills.
 
Both Riley Roberts and Taylor Nielsen paced the offense, which hit .200 on the day. Roberts had a team-high 30 assists while Nielsen dished out 21 assists. Roberts added two kills, two solo blocks, and three block-assists.
 
Senior All-American Kaitlyn Parrott led the defense with 30 digs. Morgan Manning added 13 and Roberts had 10 to help the Bronchos.
 
The Bronchos led early in the second set never by more than three points. Kingsville kept it close and took the lead by one point on a few occasions midway through the set. But UCO took back the lead with a 5-0 rally, turning a 17-16 deficit into a 21-17 lead. After a Kingsville attack error, Moore, Clayton, Fenton, Clayton again, and Ahlert all had kills to turn the tide. Central held on for the 25-23 win to even the match, 1-1.
 
UCO was down 4-0 in the third set, but quickly tied it up, 8-8. The Bronchos faced an 18-15 deficit, but used another big rally to go ahead 22-18 and take command of the frame and get a 25-21 set victory for the 2-1 lead in the match.
 
The Bronchos jumped out to an early lead and never looked back in the final set to win 25-15.
