Bronchos Earn ITA Regional Awards

TEMPE, Ariz. – The Intercollegiate Tennis Association announced last week its Regional Awards for the 2021 season and the University of Central Oklahoma was well represented on the list.

Jaron Maestas was named Wilson ITA Central Region Coach of the Year, Alina Munteanu was named ITA Central Region Assistant Coach of the Year, and Mae Canete was named ITA Central Region Rookie of the Year.

Maestas, with the helping hand of Munteanu, led Central Oklahoma to a No. 3 ranking nationally during what was the best season on record for the Bronchos. UCO went 21-2 this spring, reaching the NCAA Division II Women's Tennis National Championship Semifinals for the first time in school history.

The Bronchos had a 19-match win streak, also a school record, winning both the MIAA's regular season and postseason championships. UCO also won the Central Regional title in Edmond last month.

Maestas is 78-22 in five seasons leading the Bronchos.

Canete, a true freshman from Los Angeles, posted a perfect 21-0 record in her first collegiate season. She debuted in the national rankings at the first poll of the season and climbed from there. Canete was ranked fifth in the ITA Singles Top 50 following the season. She earned All-American honors as both a singles and doubles player in 2021.
