Eicher Walk-off Lifts Bronchos

EDMOND (May 7) – Central Oklahoma's offense was pretty much non-existent through six innings in Friday evening's battle with Northwest Missouri in the first round of the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association Tournament.

Then came the seventh, with Allie Eicher playing the lead role in a dramatic finish.

Handcuffed on one hit entering the bottom of the seventh and facing a one-run deficit, the No. 15-ranked Bronchos got a lead-off single from Lexy Dobson. Pinch-runner Shayleigh Odom was sacrificed to second base by Amelya Huggins to bring up Eicher.

And the senior first baseman delivered, driving a two-ball, no-strike pitch that bounced off the top of the wall in left-center field for a walk-off two-run home run and a stunning 3-2 victory. It was Eicher's fifth homer of the season.

UCO improved to 33-10 and can claim the best-of-three series with a win in Friday's second game. The Bearcats need a victory to force a Saturday "if necessary" contest.

"This team just finds ways to win," head coach Cody White said. "We didn't do anything offensively all game, but then Lexy gave us a spark and Allie came through with a huge hit."

UCO's first hit in the first six innings came in the bottom of the first when Tarin Dubler led off with a line-drive double to the right-center field gap. She went to third on Brighton Gilbert's sacrifice bunt and trotted home on Minter's sacrifice fly to deep center field.

It stayed 1-0 until the sixth, when NWMSU clouted a two-out, two-run homer to move in front 2-1.

The Bronchos went down in order in the sixth, but Dobson and Eicher came through in the faithful seventh.

Corrina Rivas earned the pitching win with a complete-game performance. She allowed eight hits and no walks while striking out three in improving to 15-6.
