Shelley Leads UCO In First Round

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (May 3) – Central Oklahoma struggled in first-day play at the rain-plagued NCAA Division II Women's Central Regional Tournament Monday.

The opening round was delayed by nearly five hours after morning rains swept through the area and the Bronchos ended up shooting 320 on the 5,921-yard, par-72 St. Joseph Country Club.

UCO is in eighth place in the nine-team field with two rounds remaining. Rogers State leads the way at 299, with Southwestern Oklahoma and Arkansas Tech tied for second at 307.

The Bronchos begin second-round action at 9:25 a.m. Tuesday and the tournament wraps up Wednesday. The top three teams and top three individuals not on those teams move on to the NCAA Division II Women's Golf Championships, which are set for May 11-15 in Dearborn, Mich.

UCO, looking to earn its first national tournament berth since 2015, was led by Emma Shelley's five-over-par 76. Susana Olivares added a 78, while Madison O'Dell shot 82, Emily Miller 86 and Sydney Roberts 89.

Shelley had an adventurous front nine, making the turn at even-par 36 after carding three birdies, three pars and three bogeys. The freshman bogeyed the first three holes on the back nine, but rebounded to play the last six at even-par in coming back with a 38 and is tied for fourth in the individual standings.

Olivares had four bogeys, four pars and a birdie on the front nine in making the turn at 39, then came back with another 39 on the back. She's tied for 19th.
