Bronchos Fall In Extra Innings

EDMOND (May 14) – A rare fielding miscue in Friday morning's MIAA Tournament winner's bracket finals has No. 14-ranked Central Oklahoma facing an uphill battle in its bid for the title.

The Bronchos dropped a 3-2 decision to Central Missouri in the bottom of the eighth inning when an outfield error on a lead-off single allowed the Jennies' Ashlyn Cook to race around and score the winning run.

UCO had a five-game winning streak snapped and suffered just its second loss in 24 home games this season in falling to 35-11. Central Missouri moved to 35-12 and into Saturday's finals, where they must be beaten twice.

The regular-season champion Bronchos will have to win three straight to claim the tournament title, starting with a 5 p.m. elimination contest against the winner of the Missouri Southern-Rogers State game.

"We made a whole lot of mistakes and you can't do that against as good a team as Central Missouri is," White said White. "We made it tough on ourselves, but there's nothing we can do about it now. All we can do is try to get to tomorrow and see what happens."

The Jennies broke on top 2-0 in the bottom of the second behind a four-hit barrage and it stayed that way until the sixth.

Jacee Minter got things going with a one-out single up the middle and Hazel Puempel followed with a two-run blast to right field that tied it. The line-drive shot was the ninth home run of the season for the senior standout.

UCM threatened in the bottom of the seventh after putting two runners on with one out before Shayla Harper snagged a hard-hit grounder to third and turned an inning-ending double play.

The Bronchos had a chance to move ahead in the eighth when Brighton Gilbert led off with a single to left field and Puempel had a one-out hit, but that opportunity was lost with consecutive fly outs.

Central Missouri then won it in the bottom of the inning.

UCO had put two runners on in the second and fifth innings, but couldn't push a run across either time.

Puempel led off the second with a single and Lexy Dobson had a one-out base hit, but a flyout and strikeout ended that threat. Back-to-back one-out singles by Allie Eicher and Amelya Huggins in the fifth before the Jennies got out of the inning with a popout and groundout.

Puempel went 3-for-4 to lead UCO's eight-hit attack.
