UCO Opens Postseason As Top Seed

EDMOND – The University of Central Oklahoma tennis team opens its postseason Friday with the 2021 MIAA Championship at Edmond Center Court.

Central Oklahoma will have to wait to find out its opponent though. The Bronchos are the No. 1 seed in the tournament after winning the regular season title with a perfect 8-0 record.

Missouri Western and Northeastern State are the four- and five-seeds respectively and will play at 9 a.m. Friday. The winner of that quarterfinals match gets top-seeded UCO at 4 p.m. Friday in the semifinals.

The 2021 MIAA Championship match is scheduled for Saturday at 2 p.m.

Central Oklahoma went 16-1 this season overall to go with its 8-0 record in the MIAA. The Bronchos finished third at the ITA Indoor National Championship in February, where they suffered their only loss of the season. UCO has won 14 in a row since.

The Bronchos are also coming off the most impressive showing in the MIAA postseason awards. Adel-Byanu Abidullina was named MIAA Player of the Year for the second time in her career and Mae Canete was named MIAA Freshman of the Year. Both were accompanied by head women's tennis coach Jaron Maestas being named MIAA Coach of the Year.

There's more.

The MIAA announced First Team All-MIAA for all six singles positions and all three doubles positions. Central Oklahoma earned all nine spots.

Abidullina leads the Bronchos from the No. 1 spot. The sophomore from Moscow, Russia is 14-1 this season in singles play and 12-3 in doubles play.

Canete has played mostly No. 2 for the Bronchos this season and, in her first year of collegiate tennis, the L.A. native is 15-0 in singles play and 11-2 in doubles.

Isabella Dunlap is the No. 3 for UCO and has an 11-3 overall record in singles play. She is also 12-3 in doubles, teaming up with Abidullina at No. 1.

Paola Landin is 12-2 overall in singles play, taking the No. 4 spot in most instances. The all-time wins leader at UCO is 11-2 in doubles in playing with Canete at No. 2.

Blythe Buntrock and Nikki Boyar have locked down the back of the lineup for the Bronchos. Buntrock, a freshman from Las Vegas, is 13-1 this season and has played mostly at No. 5. Boyar is 13-2 playing mostly at the final position. The two have teamed up for a 12-3 record in doubles action too.
