Gilbert 7th-inning Hit Vaults UCO Past Gorillas

EDMOND (Apri 24) – Brighton Gilbert drove in pinch-runner Kayla Mantooth with a two-out single in the bottom of the seventh inning to lift Central Oklahoma to a dramatic 3-2 first-game win over Pittsburg State Saturday afternoon.

The No. 16-ranked Bronchos scored single runs in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings to overcome a 2-0 deficit and pull out their 18th straight home win. UCO improved to 28-9 on the season and 17-4 in Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association play heading into the second game of the doubleheader.

"That was a tough one, but we found a way to get it done," head coach Cody White said. "Brighton came through with a big-time at bat for us."

Allie Eicher got UCO's winning rally started with a one-out single through the left side and was replaced on first base by Mantooth, who promptly swiped second for her first stolen base of the season.

Mantooth remained on second on a pop-up and then raced home when Gilbert blooped a full-count pitch into short left-center field, scoring the game-winner with a head-first slide on a close play at the plate.

PSU took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second with back-to-back doubles and made it 2-0 in the fifth.

UCO got back in it in the bottom of the fifth. Lexy Dobson led off with a line-drive double right right-center field, advanced to second on Taylor McKittrick's groundout and scored on Eicher's groundout.

The Bronchos tied it in the sixth on Jacee Minter's solo home run. The power-hitting freshman hammered a two-out , 1-1 pitch into the wind high over the left field fence for her 10th homer to pull UCO even.

Dobson had two of UCO's eight hits.

Kylee Lynch earned the pitching win in relief, coming on in the top of top of the seventh with two outs and a runner on second. She struck out the only batter she faced on three pitches.

Corrina Rivas went the first 6 2/3 innings, scattering seven hits while striking out five and walking one.
