Central Takes Game 2 With MWSU

EDMOND – The University of Central Oklahoma completed a doubleheader sweep of Missouri Western Saturday with a 2-1 win in the second MIAA game at Wendell Simmons Field.

UCO also won 6-4 earlier Saturday.

The Bronchos are now 17-14 on the season and 12-11 in MIAA play. UCO and Missouri Western (10-22, 8-18) will play the third and final game of the league series Sunday at 1 p.m.

Central Oklahoma got a two-RBI single out of Joe Mondragon in the bottom of the third inning Saturday afternoon, and that was all the Bronchos needed. Three Central pitchers combined to hold Missouri Western to just one run and get the win.

Mondragon came up to the plate with two outs in the bottom of the third. Philip Scott was on third base and Garrett Takamatsu on second. Both singled earlier in the inning.

Then Mondragon came through, knocking an 0-1 pitch in the air to center. The MWSU outfielder played behind the ball and let it drop in as Scott and Takamatsu easily darted home to give the Bronchos their 2-1 lead.

Bailey got the start Saturday, and though he gave up the one run in the top of the second, he settled into a solid start. The junior right-hander finished allowing just five hits in 6 2/3 innings of work. He walked three batters too, but also had eight strikeouts in the outing as he earned his first win of the season.

Jake Terry relieved Bailey with two on and two out in the seventh, but a strikeout got the Bronchos out of the inning. Terry got two outs in the eighth before Kyler Patterson relieved him. Patterson finished off the game, going 1 1/3 innings. He struck out two, including the final batter of the game.

Mondragon finished just 1-for-2 with the two RBIs. Kyle Crowl was the only Broncho with multiple hits. He went 2-for-4 with a pair of singles.

Central only scattered six hits in the game. Scott, Takamatsu, and Ryan Harrel also each had singles.

Central Oklahoma and Missouri Western will finish up the series Sunday. The Bronchos are honoring its senior class before the game.
