Central Beats Missouri Western To Open MIAA Series

EDMOND - The University of Central Oklahoma baseball team beat Missouri Western 6-4 Saturday in the first of two MIAA games between the schools on the afternoon.

Central Oklahoma improved to 16-14 overall with the win and 11-11 in MIAA play.

Garrett Takamatsu's 3-for-4 day at the plate and Luke Anderson's 10 strikeout performance led the way for the Bronchos in Game 1. The second game is scheduled for later Saturday.

Central scored one in the bottom of the first on a Takamatsu double that plated Philip Scott.

UCO made it 4-0 after three innings. Takamatsu slapped a one-out single and Joe Mondragon added a double to right center after that. Bennett Laurence gave the Bronchos their first run in the inning with a single that scored Takamatsu.

Laurence and Mondragon followed with a double steal move that Mondragon scored on after a throwing by MWSU. Laurence then moved to third on a walk and scored on a Ryan Harrel sacrifice fly to right field that made it 4-0, Central.

After giving up one in the top of the fifth, UCO answered back with two more in the bottom half. Laurence had a double to left center and Cacy Harper drew a walk before Harrel dropped a two-RBI triple down the right field line to make it 6-1, UCO.

Anderson got the start for the Bronchos and was solid through seven innings of work. The junior right-hander allowed four hits and two runs but struck out 10 Griffon batters.

Grant Larson made a short relief appearance, pitching 1/3 of an inning in the eighth. Kyler Patterson also threw 2/3 of relief work and struck out one batter.

Beaux Bonvillain finished off the game with the ninth. He walked the leadoff, but got a double play and a strikeout to end the game and earn the save.

Takamatsu finished 3-for-4 with two doubles and a single. He had one RBI and scored one run. Laurence also had a multi-hit game, going 2-for-3 with an RBI and one run scored.
