Bronchos Ready For League Tourney

The Central Oklahoma men's golf team heads to Monkey Island, Okla. this week to compete in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association Championships at Shangri-La Golf Resort.

There will be a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. Monday on the 7,188-yard, par-72 layout, with play to be held on the Heritage and Legends courses. Thirty-six holes will be contested Monday before the tournament ends Tuesday with an 18-hole round.

Ten teams will be vying for the league title, with the champion also earning an automatic berth into the NCAA Division II Central Regional that will be held May 6-8 in Kansas City, Mo.

Joining the Bronchos will be Central Missouri, Fort Hays State, Lincoln, Missouri Southern, Missouri Western, Newman, Northeastern State, Rogers State and Washburn.

The 2020 MIAA Championships were canceled by the COVID-19 health crisis. Lindenwood, no longer a member of the MIAA, won the last tournament held in 2019.

UCO has captured three MIAA titles (2013, '16 and '17) and finished fourth in the 2019 tourney.

The Bronchos have three top-four finishes in seven tournaments this spring.

Making up Central's five-man squad for the league meet will be senior Peyton Knell along with freshmen Caleb Kimmel, Ethan Galvan, Evan Griffith and Parker Rose.

Kimmel leads the team with a 74.31 scoring average and has two top-15 placings in five tournaments to his credit. Galvan has carded a 74.75 average in three tournaments with one top-10 showing.

Griffith has a 76.08 average in five events with a best-finish of ninth, while Knell has had two top-20 placings in six tournaments and has a 76.18 average and Rose is at 79.4 in two outings.
