Central Rolls Over Ichabods To Complete Sweep

TOPEKA, Kan. (April 17) – Shayla Harper and Hazel Puempel drove in three runs apiece to highlight an offensive assault that carried No. 16-ranked Central Oklahoma to a 10-1 second-game battering of Washburn Saturday afternoon at Gahnstrom Field.

It gave the Bronchos a sweep of the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association doubleheader after a 4-3 first-game victory. UCO improved to 26-8 overall and 15-3 in the league, while the Ichabods fell to 19-6 and 5-3.

Central – which scored nine of its 10 runs with two outs – also got a complete-game pitching outing from Kylee Lynch. The second-year freshman left-hander scattered six hits while striking out three and walking two in improving to 11-3.

"That was two big wins for us against a really good team," head coach Cody White said. "We came through with a lot of clutch, two-out hits and Kylee was solid once again in the circle."

The Bronchos finished with nine hits, getting two each from Harper and Jacee Minter.

UCO snapped a scoreless tie in the top of the fourth. Harper was hit by pitch to lead off the inning and she raced home when Minter followed with a double to right-center field.

That became to a 4-0 advantage in the fifth when Harper smashed her 11th homer of the season.

Taylor McKittrick opened the inning with a single to right field and Amelya Huggins reached on an error before the Ichabods got two outs. But then Harper came through, launching a no-doubt line drive that soared over the fence in straightaway center field.

The Bronchos broke the game wide open in the sixth, erupting for six runs as the lead ballooned to 10-0.

UCO started the inning with two quick outs before Huggins was hit by pitch to get things going. Brighton Gilbert followed with a single to left field and both runners advanced on an error, then Tarin Dubler delivered a two-run single to left field.

Harper singled up the middle and Minter walked to load the bases for Puempel, who drove the first pitch she saw down the left field line for a three-RBI triple. Lexy Dobson completed the big inning with a run-scoring single to right field.

Washburn scored its lone run in the bottom of the sixth, but it wasn't enough to prevent the Bronchos from securing the run-rule victory.

UCO moves on to Emporia, Kan. Sunday for a noon MIAA doubleheader against Emporia State.
