O'Dell, Shelley Lead UCO In Regional Invite

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (April 12) – Madison O'Dell and Emma Shelley both shot 76 to lead Central Oklahoma to a second-place standing after first-day play at the Central Regional Invitational Monday.

The Bronchos finished with a 307 at the 6,009-yard, par-72 Twin Oaks Country Club and trail leader Arkansas Tech by six shots. Southwestern Oklahoma is third in the 16-team tournament at 309, followed by Northeastern State (312) and Henderson State (313).

Final-round play begins at 8 a.m. Tuesday.

"We played pretty steady most of the day, though we still gave away too many shots," head coach Michael Bond said. "We're in a good position, but there's still a lot of teams in the hunt and we will need to play well tomorrow."

Shelley and O'Dell are tied for seventh in the individual standings after each finished with four-over-par 76s. UCO also got a 77 from Susana Olivares, while Sydney Roberts shot 78 and Emily Miller 81.

Shelley made three bogeys and six pars on the front nine to make the turn at three-over 38, then bogeyed No. 10. The freshman turned it on the rest of the way, reeling off eight straight pars to finish with a one-over 38 on the back.

O'Dell birdied the par-5 eighth hole while making a pair of front-nine bogeys in firing a front-nine 36 before promptly birdieing Nos. 10 and 11 to get to one-under for the day. The sophomore struggled down the stretch, carding five bogeys in her last seven holes for a closing 40.

Olivares had six pars and three bogeys in making the turn at three-over 38. The second-year freshman had three back-nine bogeys, offsetting one of those with her lone birdie of the day on the par-4 17th in coming back with a two-over 39.
