Lynch Lifts UCO Past Griffons

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (April 11) – Kylee Lynch threw a one-hit masterpiece to propel No. 18-ranked Central Oklahoma to a clutch 4-0 second-game shutout of Missouri Western Sunday afternoon.

Lynch lost a no-hit bid with one out in the bottom of the seventh inning before closing out the complete-game gem that enabled the Bronchos to earn a split of the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association doubleheader.

UCO, which dropped the opener 3-1, improved to 24-8 overall and 13-3 in the league while dropping the Griffons to 20-10 and 9-3.

"I can't say enough about how well Kylee pitched," head coach Cody White said. "She was dialed in and gave us a great performance, which we really needed after losing the first game. We manufactured a few runs and came out with a big win."

Lynch tied a career-high with eight strikeouts while walking two in improving to 10-3. The left-hander walked MWSU's lead-off batter in the first before getting three quick outs, then faced her only predicament of the game in the second.

Lynch hit the lead-off batter and walked the next one before a sacrifice bunt moved the runners to second and third. The second-year freshman got out of the jam with a pop-up and strikeout, then proceeded to dominate.

She retired 16 consecutive batters after the second-inning walk until the Griffons ruined the no-hit bid with a one-out single in the seventh. Lynch ended the game with a strikeout and groundout to register UCO's first one-hitter since 2018.

Allie Eicher and Amelya Huggins had two hits apiece and Taylor McKittrick drove in two runs to lead a seven-hit attack.

The Bronchos took a 1-0 lead in the second when Eicher led off with a double to left field, went to third on Lexy Dobson's sacrifice bunt and scored on McKittrick's groundout.

It stayed that way until the fifth when UCO gained a little breathing room with a pair of runs.

Dobson and McKittrick got things going with consecutive one-out singles to center field before Huggins plated the first run with a base hit to right-center field. Brighton Gilbert followed with an RBI fielder's choice that made it 3-0.

Central scored its final run in the sixth. Shayla Harper opened the inning with a walk, went to second on Eicher's single, took third on Dobson's second sacrifice bunt of the game and trotted home on McKittrick's sacrifice fly.

UCO finishes up a 10-game league road-swing Friday and Saturday with back-to-back doubleheaders at Emporia State and Washburn.
