Bronchos Win The Day

No. 8 Central Oklahoma Beats St. Mary's and Kingsville

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The University of Central Oklahoma tennis team made it a perfect 2-for-2 with its 6-1 win over Texas A&M Kingsville Friday afternoon in a non-conference neutral site matchup at St. Mary's University. The Bronchos also beat SMU 6-1 earlier in the day.

"We wanted to make sure we fought hard for every point today and I think we did that," UCO head tennis coach Jaron Maestas said. "We pushed them to the limit in our only loss and we won six out of seven. Today was a good day and we got a little better."

UCO took the doubles point in convincing fashion. San Antonio native Nikki Boyar, with Blythe Buntrock, cruised to a 6-0 win at the third spot in the lineup. Mae Canete and Paola Landin won 6-2 at No. 2 to clinch the doubles point for UCO. Adel-Byanu Abidullina and Isabella Dunlap also won 6-2 at the top spot.

Boyar then made quick work of the opposition as the match turned to singles play. She won 6-2, 6-1 to give UCO a 2-0 lead in the match. It wouldn't be long before Central clinched the match. Abidullina, playing at No. 2 for the first time this season, won 6-2, 6-0 before Canete, who swapped positions in the lineup with Abidullina, won 6-0, 6-1 at No. 1 to give the Bronchos a 4-0 lead and its fifth victory of 2021.

The teams finished out singles play and Landin was next to put another point on the scoreboard for Central. The junior won 6-0, 6-1 at No. 4. Buntrock made it 6-0 with a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 5 after that.

The final match in play ended with Kingsville's only point. Dunlap dropped the first set of her No. 3 singles match 6-4 but bounced back with a 6-2 win in the second. The tiebreaker was a battle. Dunlap though came up short in the end of an impressive 13-11 third set.

Central Oklahoma will return home and looks to face Cameron next Saturday in Edmond.
