Central Oklahoma Beats St. Mary's In Non-Conference Clash

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The University of Central Oklahoma tennis team beat St. Mary's 6-1 Friday morning in the first of two matches for the eighth-ranked Bronchos in the day.

UCO also took on Texas A&M Kingsville Friday afternoon.

Central Oklahoma earned the doubles point with wins at No. 1 and No. 3 to take a 1-0 lead in the match. UCO soon led 4-0 after wins at No. 2, No. 3, and No. 1 in singles clinched the match for the Bronchos.

"It was a good start to the day and I'm proud of the way the team played," UCO head tennis coach Jaron Maestas said. "St. Mary's is a good team that's hard to beat. Our girls played hard and fought and I'm glad we came away with a win."

Central went up in doubles play thanks to a win at the third spot in the lineup from Blythe Buntrock and Nikki Boyar. The duo won 6-1. Adel-Byanu Abidullina and Isabella Dunlap then won 6-4 at the top spot in the lineup to give UCO the doubles point and the 1-0 lead.

In singles play, Mae Canete was the first to finish at the No. 2 spot in the lineup. The freshman won 6-2, 6-0 to make it 2-0 UCO in the match. Dunlap won 6-4, 6-2 at the third spot to make it 3-0, Central. And Abidullina won 6-0, 7-5 at No. 1 singles to make it 4-0, UCO.

The two squads did finish out the singles matches. St. Mary's picked up its only point with a 7-5, 6-1 win at No. 6. Paola Landin (6-0, 7-5) and Buntrock (6-2, 7-5) both won at No. 4 and No. 5 respectively to give UCO the 6-1 victory in the match.
