No. 5 Central Oklahoma Sweeps No. 17 Midwestern State

WICHITA FALLS, Texas - The University of Central Oklahoma tennis team swept a nationally-ranked opponent for the third time this season Wednesday with the fifth-ranked Bronchos winning 4-0 at 17th-ranked Midwestern State.

Adel-Byanu Abidullina and Isabella Dunlap won in doubles along with Mae Canete and Paola Landin to give Central an early lead. Then Abidullina, Canete and Nikki Boyar won in singles play to make it a clean sweep for the Bronchos, who are now 9-1 overall this spring.

Abidullina and Dunlap, improving to 7-1 at No. 1 doubles, won 6-3 before Canete and Landin won 6-1 at No. 2 doubles. That gave the Bronchos the doubles point.

Abidullina then won 6-4, 6-3 in singles play at the No. 1 spot in the lineup. She is now 9-1 on the season (16-2 overall with doubles) as is UCO.

Canete, who was named MIAA Women's Tennis Athlete of the Week on Tuesday, won 6-2, 6-1 at No. 2 singles. She continued her perfect start and is now 9-0 this season in 10 matches.

Boyar, playing at No. 6, won 6-1, 6-2 to clinch the match for the Bronchos.

Central Oklahoma beat Midwestern State 7-0 in Edmond back in February and now have swept the Mustangs twice this season. UCO also swept Angelo State, which was ranked 13th in the country at the time.

UCO returns to league play this weekend and will face another nationally-rated opponent. The 19th-ranked Washburn Ichabods face off with Central at 2 p.m. Friday at Broncho Courts. UCO will also host Northwest Missouri Saturday at 2 p.m. in MIAA play.
