Bronchos Rally Past Ouachita

EDMOND (Feb. 5) – Just call them the Cardiac 'Chos.

Central Oklahoma used a seventh-inning rally to pull out a last-gasp win for the second straight game, scoring two runs in its final at bat to edge out Ouachita Baptist 4-3 on the second day of the UCO Softball Classic.

The Bronchos, who scored twice to force extra innings against Cameron Thursday night before finally winning in the 10th, improved to 3-0 in the season-opening weekend event. UCO finishes the two-day classic against Southern Nazarene.

"Once again we didn't play very well and maybe didn't deserve to win, but we found a way to come out on top," head coach Cody White said. "Their pitcher did a nice job keeping us off-balance and we didn't do a good job adjusting. It was a struggle, but this team keeps battling."

Central trailed 3-2 entering the seventh and had done nothing offensively since scoring those two runs in the first, but stunned the Tigers with two hits, a walk and an error.

Halley Randolph got things started by drawing a one-out walk on a full count and Tarin Dubler followed with a bloop single to left field. Brighton Gilbert reached on a fielder's choice that resulted in Randolph being put out at third, then Dubler scored the tying run on Hazel Puempel's clutch single to left field.

OBU intentionally walked Jacee Minter to load the bases and the game appeared headed for extra innings when Lexy Dobson hit a routine grounder to shortstop, but an error allowed Gilbert to trot home with the winning run.

The Bronchos managed just six hits, getting two each from Gilbert and Puempel. Corrina Rivas earned the pitching win with 3 1/3 innings of one-hit shutout relief.

Central broke on top quickly in the bottom of the first inning behind its first home run of the season. Gilbert reached on a one-out bunt single and Puempel followed with a laser shot that didn't take long to clear the center field fence.

The Tigers got a run back with a homer of its own in the top of the second and it stayed 2-1 until the fourth when OBU pushed across two runs on three hits to surge in front 3-2.

And that's the way it stayed until the faithful seventh.
