Bronchos Sweep In ITA Finale

EDMOND – The University of Central Oklahoma tennis team beat Angelo State 4-0 Sunday evening to take third place in the ITA Indoor National Championships at Edmond Center Court.
 
Fourth-seeded Central Oklahoma (3-1) swept sixth-seeded Angelo State. It was the third ranked opponent the Bronchos have swept this season (No. 10 Flagler, No. 13 Angelo State, No. 16 Midwestern State).
 
Central won the doubles point Sunday with wins at No. 2 and No. 3. The Bronchos won at No. 1, No. 2, and No. 4 in singles to clinch the match.
 
"I'm really proud of this team, this is a big accomplishment," UCO head tennis coach Jaron Maestas said. "We really wanted to come out and play our best today and make sure we left this tournament with a win and they did that today."
 
Paola Landin and Mae Canete won 6-3 at the second spot in the lineup and Nikki Boyar and Blythe Buntrock won 6-4 in the third spot.
 
Adel-Byanu Abidullina won 6-1, 6-4 in a hurry at No. 1 singles. Canete also won in dominating fashion, 6-0, 6-1, at No. 2 singles. Landin gave the Bronchos the sweep with a 7-5, 6-3 win at No. 4.
 
Isabella Dunlap was up in the second set of her match at No. 3. She won 7-5 and had a 3-0 lead when the Bronchos clinched the match. Buntrock had forced a third set after going down 6-3, she won 6-1 and won the first point of the third set before the match ended. Boyar did the same No. 6. She dropped the first set 6-4 before winning 6-2. Her third set was 1-1 when the match ended.
 
Central Oklahoma will now focus on a pair of non-conference matches next weekend. The Bronchos are scheduled to face Texas A&M Kingsville and St. Mary's in San Antonio, Texas this Friday.
