Griffith Leads Bronchos At WT Tourney

TOURNAMENT RESULTS

AMARILLO, Texas (Oct. 5) –
Evan Griffith fired a four-under-par 67 to lead Central Oklahoma in the final round of the Ryan Palmer Foundation Invitational that wrapped up Tuesday.
 
The Bronchos also got even-par rounds from Liam Coughlin and Ross Taylor in closing with a three-under 282. UCO finished 10th with a 54-hole total of 870 on the 6,937-yard, par-71 Amarillo Country Club.
 
Host West Texas A&M won the tournament with an 837 total, followed by Cameron (839) and Wayland Baptist (851).
 
Caleb Kimmel added a 73 and Riley Harris a 79 to round out Central's scoring.
 
"We played quite a bit better today and really finished the tournament strong," first-year head coach Derrick Thompson said. "The conditions were perfect and I was really proud of the guys for the way they competed today. Evan really had it going today and just played phenomenal."
 
Griffith started his round on No. 10 and opened with a bogey, but he quickly caught fire.
 
The junior got back to even with a birdie on the par-3 11th, then added birdies on the par-3 17th and par-5 18th to go out in two-under. Griffith kept it up on the front nine, carding birdies on Nos. 5 and 9 to go along with seven pars.
 
Griffith finished at one-under 210 for the tournament to finish 10th in the individual standings.
 
Coughlin also started the day on No. 10 and had a two-under 34 on the back nine. He made three bogeys and one birdie on the front nine in coming back with a two-over 37 for the 71.
 
Taylor began the day with a bogey on No. 10 before coming back with a pair of birdies in making the turn at one-under 35. He bogeyed back-to-back holes on the front nine to fall to one-over, but got back to even with a birdie on the par-4 seventh hole and finished with two pars.
 
Kimmel was even-par over the his last 17 holes after starting with a double bogey to record his 73.
 
Central is back in action next week, going to St. Joseph, Mo for the Missouri Western Holiday Inn Express Invitational.
