Kimmel, Griffith Pace Bronchos

AMARILLO, Texas (Oct. 4) – Caleb Kimmel and Evan Griffith shot a combined one-over-par over two rounds to pace Central Oklahoma in opening-day play at the Ryan Palmer Foundation Invitational Monday.

Kimmel was at even-par 142 after rounds of 69-73, while Griffith shot 73-70 for a one-over 143 total after two trips around the 6,937-yard, par-71 Amarillo Country Club.

The Bronchos are tied for 12th in the team race with a 588 total, shooting 293-295. Host West Texas A&M leads the way at 558, followed by Cameron (565) and Wayland Baptist (566).

Liam Coughlin shot 73-76 for UCO, while Ross Taylor went 78-76 and Riley Harris 79-78.

"We just couldn't get anything going and it wasn't a very good day for us," head coach Derrick Thompson said. "I think we'll come out tomorrow and play much better."

Kimmel started his morning round on No. 10 and promptly double bogeyed the 11th hole. He sandwiched birdies on Nos. 16 and 18 around a 17th-hole bogey for a one-over 37 on the outgoing nine, then made three birdies in shooting a closing two-under 32.

The sophomore got off to a dreadful start in the afternoon, making back-to-back double bogeys in going five-over after five holes. But Kimmel rallied strong, going three-under on his last 13 holes to card the closing 73.

Griffith birdied all three par-5s in the morning and was two-under through 14 holes before bogeying his final four holes in finishing with a two-over 73. The junior came back with 15 pars, two birdies and a lone bogey in his one-under afternoon round.
