Bronchos Race Into Postseason

KEARNEY, Neb. – The University of Central Oklahoma cross country team is scheduled to race into the postseason Saturday with the 2021 MIAA Championships.

The race, scheduled for an 11:30 a.m. start, is a 6k track around Kearney Country Club. Central Oklahoma has finished sixth, 25th, fifth, and 15th in four regular season races this fall.

Arizona Hummingbird has led the Bronchos in each race in 2021. The senior, returning for a fifth year after having last fall canceled, has been a regular contender for medals this fall.

Hummingbird has a pair of top-five finishes this season. The Wagoner, Oklahoma native finished fifth in the season-opening OBU Invite, which was a two-mile race. Hummingbird also finished fourth at the ESU invite, finishing the 5k race in 19:05.

She also set a new career best 18:32 at Missouri Southern – the sight of this year's NCAA Division II Central Regional Championships next month.

Harlie Hanson is also set for Saturday's race. The senior from Mutual, Oklahoma was the top Broncho in 2019. She's been consistent in her return to the course this season, finishing three 5k races in 20:57, 20:55, and 20:20.

Katie McCathern, Marin Rhodes, Layne Nichols, Bethany Garrison, Shiloh Hutchinson, and Clara Shirley will all join Hummingbird and Hanson at Kearney Country Club. The Broncho group of six freshmen has seen several improvements and new PRs this season.

Central Oklahoma will run Saturday for the MIAA Championship. The Bronchos will then return home to prep for the NCAA Division II Central Regional Championships in Joplin, Missouri. That race, also a 6k, is scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 6.
