Shelley Tied For Lead, UCO Second In Arkansas

HOT SPRINGS, Ark. – Emma Shelley shot a 2-under-par 70 and is tied for first after one round at the Central Regional Preview Sunday.

The Bronchos, second in the team standings, shot an opening-round 295 at the 5,948-yard, par-72 Hot Springs County Club, leaving them in second place. Central Missouri has a six-shot lead over UCO.

Final-round play begins at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday.

Shelley is tied for the individual lead with Kaylee Peterson of Northeastern State. The Bronchos also got an even-par 72 from Susana Olivares and a 76 from Taylor Towers, while Mika Ramos shot 77 and Madison O'Dell 78.

"We played well and put ourselves in a good position," head coach Michael Bond said. "Everybody limited their mistakes and we made a bunch of birdies (15 total). There are a lot of teams still in the mix, so we'll have to play just as good tomorrow."

Shelley offset a pair of front-nine bogeys with birdies on both par-5s along with the par-4 ninth in making the turn at one-under 35. The sophomore from Bartlesville, Oklahoma put together a similar performance on the back nine, birdieing both par-5s and the par-4 17th to overcome two bogeys in finishing off the 70.

Olivares got off to a quick start and was two-under after six holes before making back-to-back bogeys on Nos. 7 and 8 in shooting even-par 36 on the front. The sophomore birdied the par-4 11th and par-5 12th in getting back to two-under and then parred the next five holes before a double-bogey on 18 left her at with a back-nine 36 and a 72 for the day.

Towers shot four-over 40 on the front nine, but made a pair of birdies on the final nine holes in coming back with an even-par 36. Ramos had two birdies on the front nine and one more on 12 to go with nine pars on the day and a first-round 77. O'Dell bogeyed No. 1 before landing nine consecutive pars. She doubled 11 but added four more pars in the round before finishing with a 78.
