Central Oklahoma Opens Indoor Season In Kansas

Bronchos See Dozens Of Top 10 Finishes

TOPEKA, Kan. – The University of Central Oklahoma track & field team competed for the first time this season Saturday and the Bronchos left Washburn University's new Indoor Athletic Facility with 26 top-10 finishes and another 10 top-fives.

Arizona Hummingbird scored a second-place finish in the 3,000-meter race to go with a third-place finish in the 1-Mile run and Abena Sey earned a second-place finish in the high jump. Alexis McGill (400m) and Dahsauni Lyday (shot put) also added third-place finishes.

Sierra Munoz posted a fourth-place finish in the shot put one spot behind Lyday. And Emme Douglas (400m), Skylar Standokes (60-meter hurdles), McGill (triple jump), and Munoz (weight throw) all earned fifth-place finishes.

"First and foremost it's just great to be out here competing again," UCO head track & field coach Martha Brennan said. "The best part of the day is just that we got to have this meet. But there were a lot of good things today and some things we know we need to work on."

Hummingbird, a veteran Central distance runner, earned the second-place finish in the 3,000 meters with a 10:41.53 to set a new career best mark. She had only run the 3,000 meters once before in her career and was 16 seconds faster than her previous try last season. She also captured a third-place showing in the 1-Mile run with a time of 5:12.38.

Sey, a former Outdoor All-American and Indoor national qualifier, started the season strong with a second-place finish in the high jump. The junior took runner-up honors after clearing 1.56 meters (5 feet, 1 1/4 inches). She also finished eighth in the triple jump with a 10.71-meter leap.

McGill, a freshman, had a solid debut for the Bronchos Saturday. She finished third in the 400 with a time of 1:04.29 and fifth in the triple jump with an 11.01-meter leap.

Lyday, also a freshman, earned third-place in the shot put in her first collegiate meet. The Wagoner, Okla. native hit 12.95 meters. She also threw 12.52 meters in the weight throw to take sixth place in that event.

Munoz finished fourth in the shot put with a 12.06-meter throw and finished fifth in the weight throw with a 13.42-meter throw – the latter being a new career best mark. Douglas earned her fifth-place finish in the 400, running the race in 1:06.43. The former UCO basketball player also competed in the 200 and the long jump.

Standokes, whose more than 30 career top-10 finishes are the most of anyone in the Central lineup, finished fifth in the 60-meter hurdles Saturday. After finishing sixth in her prelim heat with a time of 9.8 seconds, Standokes took fifth in the finals with a time of 9.82.

Central Oklahoma is scheduled to return to competition next weekend. The Bronchos are slated to visit Northwest Missouri for the Northwest Open.
