Know The 'Chos: Paola Landin

The University of Central Oklahoma athletic department is showcasing its student-athletes each Monday this fall with a quick glance at who your favorite Bronchos are on and off the field in a segment called Know The 'Chos, sponsored by McBride Orthopedic Hospital.

Up this week is a junior tennis player who is a two-time All-American in doubles play and, with 120 career victories already, is on track to become the all-time wins leader at Central.

A junior for the second time around thanks to the unfortunate cancelling of the spring 2020 season, this tennis player's career numbers are off the charts after two seasons. She won 44 matches her freshman season and 45 more her sophomore season. She also won 31 matches during her junior season prior to the shutdown last March.

Both of her All-American selections have come as a doubles player and the records show why. In 2017-18, she went 23-7 in doubles play. In 2018-19, she went 20-12. Last season, again before the shutdown, she was 17-5.

Favorite memory at Central: My favorite athletic memory at UCO was my freshman year when we won regionals and I did not realize we qualified for nationals until our coach gathered us and congratulated us for making it to nationals. That was the first time in around 10 years I believe that UCO women's tennis team had finally qualified for nationals again. It was a special moment for me since I was able to be part of that. After my freshman year our team has gotten stronger and we have had the opportunity to participate at nationals every year.

Best part of UCO: For me the best part of going to UCO was having the opportunity to study in a different country and playing/representing UCO. Having the experience of learning a different culture and seeing how sports are a big part of the school was something amazing for me to be a part of. Where I come from in Mexico sports are not that important like they are here. I am proud to say I represent UCO.

More about this student-athlete: Leader of national power Central Oklahoma. Has started every match for the Bronchos for the past two+ seasons.

Went 17-5 in doubles play during junior season before the public health crisis canceled the season. Was also 14-5 in singles play for a combined 31-10 overall record. Was named Doubles All-American for the second year in a row based on ITA's rankings when season ended.

During sophomore campaign, went a combined 45-19, going 25-7 in singles competition while putting together a smooth 20-12 record in doubles play. Was named an ITA All-American in doubles, finishing the season ranked ninth nationally. She also earned First Team All-MIAA honors after going 9-0 in the league's singles competition and helped UCO win the MIAA postseason tournament championship and a second consecutive NCAA regional title.

Her freshman season she was a serious candidate for MIAA Freshman of the Year honors after winning 44 matches. She went 21-8 in singles competition and 23-7 in doubles action and earned All-MIAA honors for the first time. She helped UCO to a second-place finish at the MIAA Championships, an NCAA Central Regional title, and the NCAA Division II national quarterfinals.
