Central Oklahoma Wins Back-To-Back MIAA Women's Tennis Championships

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – Central Oklahoma claimed the MIAA Women's Tennis Championship Sunday with a 4-0 win over Washburn in the finals.

UCO and WU tied for first place in the regular season and with Central's win over the Ichabods of Topeka, Kansas, the Bronchos were the No. 1 seed in the postseason tournament. Sunday's meeting ended just like the one in Edmond on March 28 – with a Central Oklahoma victory.

"Really proud of this group," UCO head women's tennis coach Joe Vann said. "I think we played the two best opponents we could have drawn in the semifinals and the championship match. But we stayed true to ourselves and found a way to get it done. This was one of our goals and we're glad we still have a chance to go after the next one."

UCO earned the MIAA's automatic bid to the NCAA Division II Women's Tennis Championship, which begins with regionals next weekend. The Bronchos will find out if they are hosting one of the two Central Region tournaments as well as opponent and game times Monday night during the NCAA Selection Show.

The Bronchos got off to a good start doing what they do best – doubles. Mei Hasegawa and Pete Komada are ranked No. 7 in the country in the latest ITA Doubles Top 50 and the duo won 6-2 against Washburn's 49th-ranked tandem. Anika Ouwejan and Ayaka Koga also won 6-2 to give the Bronchos the doubles point and the early 1-0 lead.

In nine regular season MIAA matches, plus two postseason contests, Central Oklahoma improved 31-0 in doubles matches against MIAA foes.

As play turned to singles, Karyna Yurchenko would give Central a 2-0 lead. The senior veteran leader of the program won 6-3, 6-1 at the No. 4 position. Yurchenko went 3-0 this weekend to lead the Bronchos.

Hasegawa went 4-0 this weekend and she gave the Bronchos a 3-0 lead in the match with a 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 1 singles. Ranked No. 20 in the ITA Singles Top 75, Hasegawa beat for the second time this season Washburn's 31st-ranked Renske Ubachs.

Hui Soo clinched the semifinals win over Missouri Western on Saturday and she would do the honors for the Bronchos again on Championship Sunday. The sophomore won 6-4, 6-4 at No. 6 singles to give Central Oklahoma a 4-0 lead and the match.

UCO won its third regular season MIAA title this year, also claiming top honors in 2021 and 2022. The Bronchos won their fifth postseason tournament title, also taking the crown in 2019, 2021, 2022, and 2025. Since the MIAA began awarding both regular season and postseason champions, a team has won both seven times. UCO has done it three times.
