Jacob Lackey Leads Central Crew In Oklahoma Open

EDMOND – University of Central Oklahoma junior Jacob Lackey, with seven other current or former Bronchos and his head coach, participated in the annual Oklahoma Open this weekend at Oak Tree.

Lackey, from McPherson, Kansas, finished 47th in the field of more than 150 golfers after posting a 54-hole total of 219 at Oak Tree East. He was one of just four amateurs to make the cut.

"It was a fun week getting to play against a very strong field," Lackey said. "I wish I could have finished better but overall it was a great experience and I learned a lot."

Lackey was the only one of the nine Central related linksters to make the cut. He shot a 3-over 73 on Thursday in the opening round and answered that with a big performance on Friday to make the cut, posting a 4-under 66 after his second trip around the course.

Even par (140) was the cut and Lackey found himself 1-under after two days.

Saturday, the Broncho junior, who placed in the top 20 in five of seven tournaments during the shortened 2019-20 season, posted a 10-over 80 to finish the tournament in 47th place.

Central head men's golf coach Josh Fosdick also played in the tournament. He shot a 1-over par 71 Thursday before hitting 4-over 74 on Friday.

Lackey's current teammates, Parker Rose and Peyton Knell, also played this weekend. Rose shot a 6-over 76 on Thursday before firing an even-par 70 on Friday. Knell shot rounds of 76 and 75.

Five former Bronchos also joined the field. Alberto Ruiz-Nava, who played for the Bronchos from 2015-17, got off to a great start on Thursday. The Los Cabos, Mexico native blasted toward the top with a 5-under 65 his first trip around Oak Tree East and found himself in a tie for sixth place after the first day. After the second day, Ruiz-Nava shot a 5-over 75 to land even at 140 after 36 holes. He missed the cut by one stroke.

Derek  Franco and Andrew  Green both played for the Bronchos from 2009-12 and both played in the Oklahoma Open this weekend. Franco finished 7-over after rounds of 75 and 72. Green shot a 5-over 145 after posting rounds of 71 and 74.

Craig Vanhorn played for the Bronchos in the late 1980s and early 1990s. He posted rounds of 4-over 74 and a 2-under 68 to finish with a 2-over 142 for the tournament. Kevin Keck, a Broncho in the early to mid 1990s, shot rounds of 74 and 75 and finished with 9-over 149.
