Abidullina Takes ITA Summer Circuit Event

WICHITA, Kan. – Adel-Byanu Abidullina won the ITA Summer Circuit event at Wichita State this weekend, taking home the top honor in a tournament stacked with high-level competition.

Abidullina, a sophomore at the University of Central Oklahoma and two-time All-American, who was named MIAA Freshman of the Year in 2019 as well as MIAA co-Player of the Year, posted a 4-0 mark in the tournament, one of several hosted by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association this past weekend. The ITA frequently hosts tournaments for college-aged individuals – also open to any registrant – to compete in throughout the summer.

Abidullina won her Round of 16 match in straight sets, taking a 6-1, 6-2 victory. She wouldn't get by so easy the rest of the way. In the quarterfinals, Abidullina won 7-5, 3-6, 1-0 (10-7) over Wichita State's decorated senior Marta Belluco. In the semis, she won 6-3, 3-6, 1-0 (11-9) over former Kansas University All-Big 12 performer Sofia Smagina. And in the championship against Camille Kiss, of California, Abidullina dropped the first set before making a comeback, winning the title 3-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10-7).

A pair of other Bronchos entered the tournament as well.

Isabella Dunlap nearly met Abidullina in the finals too. The sophomore, who is also a two-time All-American, won her Round of 16 match in three sets 1-6, 6-1, 1-0 (12-10). She cruised in the quarterfinals 6-2, 6-3. But then lost in the semis 1-6, 1-6.

Nikki Boyar, another sophomore All-American at Central, lost 2-6, 6-3, 0-1 (5-10) in the Round of 16.
