Central Heads To MIAA Championship

PITTSBURG, Kan. – The University of Central Oklahoma track & field team embarks on the postseason Friday with the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association Indoor Championships at Pittsburg State University.

Central Oklahoma has a 17-person contingent heading to PSU looking to garner postseason accolades and a possible spot in the NCAA Indoor Championships next month.

The Bronchos will begin Friday with the pentathlon. Tyleecia Delaney is set to contend in the five-event competition. The freshman competed in her first pentathlon two weeks ago in Norman and scored 2,497 points to take a third-place finish at the UCO Alumni Classic.

Saturday, the rest of the meet goes in full force.

UCO will look to senior Madelyn Caldwell for points in the meet. The Pauls Valley, Okla. native has hit numerous provisional qualifying marks in both the shot put and the weight throw this season, with some of her best marks coming at Pittsburg. Caldwell ranks sixth in the MIAA in both events, with season highs of 14.14 meters (shot put) and 17.38 meters (weight throw).

Central has another good opportunity in the high jump. Sophomore Abena Sey ranks fourth in the MIAA this season, with a provisional mark of 1.71 meters. She hit that mark at Kansas State last month. Sey averages a 1.63-meter mark in four career events in Pittsburg.

A couple of distance runners aim to score as well. Harlie Hanson will run in the 3,000 and 5,000 meters, as well as the first leg of the Distance Medley Relay. Arizona Hummingbird will take on the Mile and the last leg of the medley.

The MIAA Indoor Championships is set to conclude Sunday with final events.
