Roberts Earns National Tournament Berth

MUSKOGEE, Okla. (May 7) – Central Oklahoma's Sydney Roberts played her best when the pressure was on down the stretch and ended up earning a berth in the NCAA Division II national tournament, though as a team the Bronchos fell short of qualifying.

Roberts was one-under-par over the last 10 holes to finish off a final-round 74 that enabled her to grab one of the four individual spots available at the Central Regional that wrapped up Tuesday at the 5,892-yard, par-71 Muskogee Country Club.

UCO had rounds of 314-309 for the day in finishing the two-day, 54-hole tournament with a 935 total, just four shots off the fourth-place finish needed to advance. Southwestern Oklahoma won the 12-team event at 893, followed by Arkansas Tech (897), Northeastern State (913) and Minnesota State-Mankato (931).

The top-four teams and top-four individuals not on a qualifying team move on to the NCAA Division II Women's Golf Championships, which will be held May 14-18 in West Palm Beach, Fla.

Roberts ended up tying for ninth in the medalist standings with a 228 total after shooting 76-74 on the final day. Madison O'Dell shot 77-81, while Faith Stewart had rounds of 79-83, Yuna Sato 82-77 and Makena Mucciaccio 84-77.

"Sydney played great today, especially at the end when she really needed to," head coach Michael Bond said. "It's bittersweet since obviously our goal was to qualify as a team, but we just came up a little short. I'm proud of the way we battled."

Roberts was four-over on the last six holes in the morning round in closing out the 76 and then started the afternoon with three straight pars before bogeying four of the next five.

The junior standout was spectacular after that, ripping off nine straight pars and then birdieing her final hole – the par-4 sixth – to finish off the 74 that clinched a national tournament berth.

Mucciaccio struggled to a second-round 84 before bouncing back in the afternoon with the 77, while Sato had three birdies in her final-round 77.
