EDMOND - The University of Central Oklahoma will honor former Broncho Gladys Griffin ahead of this weekend's matchup with Washburn.
Central Oklahoma will honor its only four-time All-American in a ceremony prior to Game 1 of the Bronchos' doubleheader Saturday. Griffin, whose No. 2 is retired at UCO, will be recognized for her achievements before throwing out a ceremonial first pitch.
Griffin was one of the most dominant pitchers in NAIA history during her storybook career at then Central State University, earning All-America honors four straight times from 1985-88 while helping the Bronchos to a 108-48 record. Gladys compiled a 77-27 record during her career and finished with an astounding 0.43 earned run average. In 716 career innings pitched, Griffin allowed just 328 hits and 44 earned runs while striking out 876 and walking just 142. She also had career .279 batting average with 29 doubles and 53 RBIs.
Griffin was 23-8 with a 0.39 ERA as a freshman in 1985, 18-6 with an 0.40 ERA in '86, 17-4 with a 0.31 ERA in 1987 and 19-9 with a 0.59 ERA as a senior in 1988.
She owns the UCO all-time record for innings pitched (716), wins (77), lowest ERA in one season (0.31), and in a career (0.43), as well the school's all-time record for career strikeouts (876).
Central Oklahoma is currently ranked No. 2 in the nation and has a 35-3 record heading into the weekend.
