UCO Hosts Pittsburg State

EDMOND – The University of Central Oklahoma baseball team is scheduled to play a three-game series with Pittsburg State beginning Friday at 6 p.m. The schools will also play Saturday at 3 p.m. and Sunday at 1 p.m. in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association series at Wendell Simmons Field.

Central Oklahoma is 13-9 on the season heading into the weekend and ranked No. 30 in the Collegiate Baseball News Top 30. The Bronchos are 6-6 in league play. Pittsburg State is 12-10 overall and 7-5 in the MIAA.

"Pittsburg State is a well-coached team so they aren't going to be an easy out," UCO head baseball coach John Martin said. "You have to work really hard in every inning to get past them."

UCO enters the series looking to snap a three-game losing streak. After beating Emporia State last Friday, the Bronchos dropped the next two against the Hornets before falling to Southeastern Oklahoma State on Tuesday night.

Central Oklahoma brings into the series a stellar pitching staff with a 3.76 earned run average through 22 games played this season. UCO allows 7.3 hits per game this season and 4.1 runs per game. The Bronchos boast one of the top strikeout staffs in the league. UCO has 235 total strikeouts this season, 10.6 per game.

Dylan Hall enters the weekend 4-2 overall and has a 3.55 ERA. The junior righty has a team-high 51 strikeouts in 38 innings pitched this season. Gabe Littlejim is 3-3 on the mound as a starter and has 43 strikeouts in 34 innings of work. He has a 3.18 ERA. Spencer Van Scoyoc was late getting into the starting rotation this season, but he also has been key in the Bronchos' strikeouts this season. He has 17 in 15 1/3 innings of work and has a 4.11 ERA.

At the plate, Central Oklahoma has a team batting average of .245. The Bronchos average 7.8 hits per game and 5.4 runs per game.

Paul Kropf, who bats .247, is one of four Bronchos with at least 20 hits through 22 games this season. The senior first baseman has a team-high six home runs and 16 RBIs. Philip Scott leads the team with a .325 batting average. The junior infielder has 27 hits (10 for extra bases) and 12 RBIs. He also has 15 runs scored this season, second most on the team.

Kyle Crowl's .263 batting average comes from 21 hits, 12 RBIs, and a team-high 16 runs scored. The senior infielder is second on the team with four home runs. Brice West (.324) also has 22 hits – five doubles, two triples, and one home run – and has scored 11 runs this season.

Brock Ruminer (.306) and Dru Barrier (.298) both lead UCO at the plate as well. Ruminer has 15 hits on the season and has scored 14 runs. He's also 13-for-13 stealing bases in 19 games played this season. Barrier, who has played in 15 games, has 14 hits.

Pittsburg State averages 8.1 hits per game and an even six runs per game. The Gorillas have a team batting average of .244. PSU's staff has a team ERA of 4.21 and gives up nine hits per game and 5.1 runs per game. Pitt State has tallied 187 total strikeouts this season, 8.5 per game.

Central Oklahoma will play one more home game next week to wrap up an eight-game homestand. The Bronchos host Oklahoma Christian on Tuesday, March 26. UCO will then visit Missouri Western in St. Joseph the following weekend in MIAA play.
