McLeod, Puempel Claim MIAA Honors

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (Feb. 13) -- Central Oklahoma swept Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association player of the week honors for softball Wednesday, with Sydney McLeod earning Pitcher of the Week accolades while Hazel Puempel was named Hitter of the Week.

The duo led the Bronchos to a 5-0 mark in the Raising Cane's Softball Festival last week in the first home games of the 2019 campaign.

McLeod went 3-0 in the circle with an 0.44 ERA while striking out 12 batters and walking just three in 16 innings pitched.  The junior left-hander threw a complete game in UCO's 8-4 win over Cameron, got the win over Texas Woman's with two innings of shutout relief and threw a complete-game shutout in a 7-0 victory over East Central.

Puempel sizzled at the plate for the Bronchos, finishing with a .625 average in the festival.  The junior outfielder went 10-for-16 at the plate with two doubles, a triple and 11 runs batted in, finishing with an .875 slugging percentage and .700 on-base percentage.  Puempel drove in four runs in UCO's 11-8 win over Southern Nazarene and also had a pair of three-RBI games while hitting safely in all five games.

UCO, now 9-1 on the season, is home again this weekend for the UCO-OC Invitational.  The Bronchos will play four games in the three-day event, starting at 2 p.m. Friday against Northwestern Oklahoma.
