UCO Flattens Mules

WARRENSBURG, Mo. (Feb. 11) – Will Steltzlen, Brik Filippo and Colton Looper scored falls to lead a bevy of bonus-point wins that carried No. 12-ranked Central Oklahoma to a 45-0 drubbing of Central Missouri Monday night.

The Bronchos dominated from the outset in continuing their stranglehold over the Mules, improving to 41-0 in the series. UCO ended the dual season 12-4 in recording its first shutout since a 51-0 rout of Oklahoma Wesleyan in the 2017-18 season opener.

Steltzlen had the quickest fall of the night, needing just 31 seconds to end his 141-pound match. Looper also had a first-period pin at 197 and Filippo secured his fall in the third stanza at 149.

Central also got technical falls from 149 Ty Lucas and 184 Heath Gray, while 125 Tanner Cole and 165 Dayton Garrett had major decisions. Noah McQuigg (133), Devin Crawl (174) and Greg Wilson (285) all earned regular decisions.

"We stayed on the attack and wrestled pretty well overall," head coach Todd Steidley said. "It was a good way to end the dual season. We've come a long way this season, but there's still a lot of work to do in the next couple of weeks to get ready for the regional."

Cole got UCO off to a fast start with a 10-1 major decision in the opening match, not earning the bonus win until scoring a takedown with 18 seconds left.

McQuigg used a takedown and four-point near-fall in the final minute to overcome a 6-1 deficit and pull out a thrilling 7-6 victory, then Steltzlen wasted little time getting a takedown and hooking up a cradle to notch his fall at 141.

Filippo built an 11-2 lead before sticking Justin Mitchell at the 5:27 mark to record his 20th win of the season and Lucas had four near-falls in the first period to claim a 16-0 technical fall.

Garrett took control of his match with an early four-point move and wrapped up a 17-3 rout with a takedown and four-point near-fall in the final 30 seconds.

Crawl had three takedowns and more than four minutes riding time in an easy 8-1 triumph at 174 before Gray picked up his 18th bonus win of the season with a 17-1 technical fall, improving to 29-1 with his 14th consecutive victory.

Looper led 6-0 before recording his team-high 10th fall at the 2:20 mark and Wilson used a riding time point to pull out a tight 2-1 win and finish off the perfect night.

The Bronchos don't compete again until going to St. Charles, Mo. Feb. 23 for the NCAA Division II Super Regional IV Tournament. The top three placers at each of the 10 weights in that meet qualify for the NCAA Division II Wrestling Championships, set for March 8-9 in Cleveland, Ohio.
