UCO To Take On Newman Saturday

WICHITA, Kan. – The University of Central Oklahoma women's basketball team returns to the court following a 14-day break and will take on Newman in Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association play.

UCO will then have another 14-day break before hosting Central Missouri in January. The Broncho schedule for the month of December consists of all of three games. UCO is 2-0 this month.

The Bronchos are 8-2 this season and already have a 2-0 mark in league play. UCO made its season debut in the D2SIDA Top 25, coming in at No. 17 in this week's national poll as voted on by sports information directors. Central Oklahoma is, and has for three weeks now, landed in the receiving votes section of the WBCA Top 25, falling just outside of the national poll of Division II coaches.

This will be the third matchup between UCO and Newman ever. Central beat Newman 93-86 during the 2011-12 season. The Bronchos also won 106-35 during the 1996-97 season. That game holds the school record for largest margin of victory (71 points).

This season, UCO enters Saturday's game averaging 82.5 points per game, which ranks 15th in the nation. Kelsey Johnson leads the team with a 12.4 points per game mark. She has hit 53.9 percent of her shots this season (48 of 89), and ranks fifth in the MIAA with that mark. Johnson also is the team's leading rebounder at 8.1 per game.

Micayla Haynes is the second Broncho to average double digits on offense this season, scoring 11.7 points per game. Haynes has a team high 19 made 3-pointers. Jaci Littell averages 9.5 points per game and is second on the team with 16 made threes. She's also second with her 5.2 rebounds per game average. Shatoya Bryson also averages 9.0 points per game, has hit 13 threes, and leads the team with 27 steals.

Johnson, Haynes, Littell, and Bryson make up four of five starters in the Broncho lineup. Clary Donica is the fifth and he is averaging 6.5 points per game and 4.2 rebounds per game.

The Bronchos depth has been key though, with Central's second unit as capable as its first.

Brooke Rayner is averaging 8.1 points per game and 2.3 assists per game and has hit 12 3-pointers in 10 games. Kaci Richardson scores 7.1 points per game and is third on the team pulling down five rebounds per game. McKenna Pulley (6.5 ppg), Lauren Chancellor (5.4) and Aliyah Llanusa (3.8) give Central's second five a combined 30.9 points per game.

Newman as a team averages 63.1 points per game. The Jets shoot 39.9 percent from the field overall, 32.3 percent from behind the arc, and 68.2 percent from the free-throw line. Newman averages 6.8 made 3-pointers per game and 12.3 made free-throws per game. Kaitlyn Potter is averaging 15.7 points per game to lead the team. She's the only Newman player averaging more than 10 points per game.

Central Oklahoma will have another 14-day break following Saturday's game. The Bronchos host Central Missouri Saturday, Jan. 4 at Hamilton Field House.
