Bronchos Sign Blue-Chip Prospect

EDMOND – The University of Central Oklahoma tennis team announced Wednesday the signing of blue-chip prospect Mae Canete to a national letter of intent, with the highly touted player set to join the Bronchos next fall.

"We are really excited to welcome Mae as a Broncho next fall," UCO head tennis coach Jaron Maestas said. "She's going to make us instantly better. We feel like we have a great program with some really good players and she is going to make us better. That says something about her talent level. We're ready for her to join the team and welcome her to the family."

Canete will come to UCO from Los Angeles, Calif. and will bring an extensive and glowing resume following her graduation from Venice High in 2020.

The 5-foot-3 prospect has wins over some of the biggest names in tennis in her age group from all over the country – including globally-rated star Coco Gauff, who Canete beat in three sets in the USTA National Spring Tournament.

The list doesn't stop there either. Canete has been the top-rated player in the country at her age division and backed up the ranking with numerous titles. She won a gold ball at the USTA Winter Championships in 2016 and has over a dozen wins against players with higher than a 10 UTR (Universal Tennis Rating).

Canete will join a Central Oklahoma team that has become a national contender over the past three and a half seasons. The Bronchos have made the national tournament in each of Maestas's three seasons and have won regional titles in each of the past two seasons. UCO is a nationally-ranked team, with nationally-ranked singles and doubles players up and down the lineup.

The Bronchos return to the court in January to continue their 2019-20 season.
