UCO Downed at Fort Hays

HAYS, Kan. - The University of Central Oklahoma football team lost 15-0 to Fort Hays State Saturday night in Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association play before 7,140 fans at Lewis Field Stadium. The Bronchos fall to 2-3 on the season and in league play in what was the first shutout against the Bronchos in seven years.

"I think our defense played very well tonight to not give up a touchdown and they did all they could to give us a chance to win," seventh-year head football coach Nick Bobeck said. "Our offensive struggles cost us too much tonight. We just couldn't get it going in a game we were never out of."

Central's defense was led by Colton Lindsey's nine tackles. Chris Pogi, Alex Figueroa, and O'Shay Harris each had seven tackles. The Bronchos came up with stop after stop on FHSU's drives, forcing the Tigers to kick six field goals on the night. But by the game's end, Central's offense just couldn't connect.

The Bronchos totaled 234 yards of total offense, on 59 plays. It only had the ball for 23:33 in the game.

Chandler Garrett, who was named MIAA Offensive Player of the Week for his efforts last week, finished Saturday 16-38 for 175 yards and threw two interceptions. He was also the Bronchos' leading rusher with 37 yards on 14 carries.

UCO had the ball three times in the first quarter and went three & out on each possession, failing to get a single first down. The Bronchos tallied just 18 yards on nine total plays. The time of possession reflected the Hays dominance. UCO had the ball just 4:40 of the opening quarter.

The Broncho defense held tough though. Fort Hays State, in 10:20, had 142 yards of offense on 14 plays but only managed a 3-0 lead after the first quarter.

The second quarter featured more of the same.

Hays went up 6-0 with a second field goal on the second play of the second quarter, this time a 39-yard field goal. UCO then went three & out again (four plays if you count a holding penalty). And Hays then made it 9-0 with 10:59 to play in the second with its third field goal of the game.

UCO went three & out again for the fifth time in as many possessions, but forced the same from Fort Hays State on the next trip out. And after the Bronchos failed to get a first down on the sixth consecutive possession, Hays again kicked a field goal to go up 12-0.

Garrett connected with Ronald Monroe on 1st & 10 for a 40-yard gain to finally get the Bronchos a first down in the game. But UCO only gained two yards after that. Alex Quevedo lined up a 46-yard field goal, but that came up short.

The Bronchos ended the first half with 88 total yards of offense on 23 plays (53 passing, 35 rushing) and no points.

It continued in the third quarter. UCO went punt, punt, interception, in the quarter and Fort Hays State kicked another field goal to make it 15-0. The quarter was a near exact replica of each of the first two quarters as UCO's offense continued to struggle.

UCO put up minimal numbers in the fourth quarter to keep the game interesting, but in the end, Fort Hays State's defense was too much.

Dustin Basks led the UCO receiver corps with 56 yards on six catches. Mekail Hall (3-53), Tyrone Howell (2-18), and Clay McKenzie (2-9) all made efforts in the Broncho passing game. McKenzie added 22 yards on seven carries - all in the first half.

The Bronchos return home in Week 6 to play Central Missouri (3-2, 3-2 MIAA). That game, which is Central's 101st Homecoming, will kickoff from Wantland Stadium at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 6.
