UCO Run-Rules Northwest Missouri To Open Series

EDMOND – The University of Central Oklahoma run-ruled Northwest Missouri 17-0 Friday afternoon in Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association play to pull into a first-place tie with the Bearcats of Maryville, Mo. in the league standings with two games left in the regular season.

The Bronchos improved to 32-16 with the win and are 24-10 in the MIAA. Northwest Missouri is 29-19 overall and 24-10 in league play. Central Missouri, which is playing its last two regular season games at Northeastern State, is also 24-10 ahead of Sunday's final day of play.

"This is a good way to start the series," UCO head baseball coach John Martin said. "You want to win every game, but you always want to win the first game. That sets the tone for the series. And then to do it like we were able to today is also good. It gives the guys a lot of confidence."

Senior righty Ryan Lemoine improved to 8-2 on the season with the win. He tossed a solid six innings of work, allowing four hits and striking out seven.

Lemoine got a 1-2-3 first inning and one of his seven strikeouts on the day. Then his offense got to work. But it wouldn't be a slugfest for the Bronchos in the bottom of the first.

NWMSU starter Joseph Hietpas issued a walk to UCO leadoff hitter Jake Dyer, then Kyle Miskovsky reached on a single. Hietpas then walked the next five batters, giving the Bronchos a 3-0 lead as Central barely took the bat of its shoulders.

Lemoine allowed two singles in the second, but also struck out Bearcat batters for all three outs and got out of the inning unscathed.

The Bronchos added two more in the second. Paul Kropf smacked an RBI double to score Miskovsky and Trae Smith scored Kropf with an RBI single.

UCO scored in five of the six innings it came to the plate Friday.

An Xavier Freeman homer highlighted a five-run fourth inning that put the Bronchos up 10-0, Kropf hit a two-RBI double in the fifth to make it 12-0, and UCO scored five runs on four hits in the sixth to make it 17-0.

Miskovsky and Kropf both went 3-for-3 and combined for seven runs scored and five RBIs. Freeman was 2-for-3 with four RBIs and two runs scored. UCO got 13 hits on the day from eight different batters.

Lemoine was dominant in his start, and despite two walks, Junior Obeso recorded three strikeouts in the top of the seventh inning to cap off the Broncho win.

Game 2 of the three-game series is Saturday at 3 p.m. The Bronchos close out the 2018 regular season on Sunday at 1 p.m.
