UCO Outlasts Kearney In Sunday Slugfest

KEARNEY, Neb. – The University of Central Oklahoma baseball team outlasted Nebraska-Kearney 13-10 in a rubber match slugfest Sunday afternoon at Memorial Field, giving the Bronchos two of three from the Lopers this weekend in a Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association series. Central improved to 10-6 with the win and is 5-1 in league play.

"I'm glad to be going home with two wins," UCO head coach John martin said. "This was a tough series with as well as both teams hit the ball. It's good to be on the better end of that."

UCO won Sunday behind a powerful offense that got started in the top of the first inning. The Bronchos, who tallied 45 hits in three games this weekend, got a hit in each of their first five at bats. Jake Dyer led off with a single, Kyle Miskovsky followed with the same, and Paul Kropf smacked a three-run home run to left field to make it 3-0.

Dayne Sommer then hit a solo homer to left to make it 4-0. Xavier Freeman followed with a single before Kearney recorded an out. Taylor Avila then smacked a one-out double to left center to score Freeman. And Bryant Klusener hit UCO's third home run of the inning with a two-run shot to center. Dyer would also single for the second time in the inning before UNK got out of the top of the first.

Kropf scored in the top of the second to make it 8-0 Bronchos. UNK then went on a bit of a rally, scoring five in the bottom of the second off Tyler Culver to make a game out of Sunday's series finale.

After a few scoreless innings, the Bronchos got back to the high-powered offense in the sixth.

Xavier Warren led off with an infield single, and Dyer doubled down the left field line. After Miskovskey grounded out, Kropf singled to center to score two and make it 10-5. Sommer then hit his second home run of the game to make it 12-5.

Dyer hit an RBI single in the seventh to score Justin Brown and add the Bronchos' 13th run of the day.

Culver threw six innings Sunday despite UNK faring well against the senior righty from Pawhuska. Culver allowed nine hits and seven runs. He walked three and struck out six to move to 3-0 on the season.

Will Olds came on for 1/3 inning of relief work. Josh Rutland threw 1 2/3 innings out of the bullpen. And Austin Lambright closed the game out in the ninth for his third save of the season.

Dyer's 4-for-6 day led the charge for the Bronchos. The senior outfielder finished the three-game series 9-for-17 with three doubles and five runs batted in and four runs scored. Kropf and Sommer each had two hits. Kropf led the team with five RBIs and three runs scored Sunday.

The Bronchos return to Edmond for an off-day Monday. Central then makes a short trek east to Shawnee, Okla. to take on Oklahoma Baptist on Tuesday. The teams will play a doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m. UCO's next home game is Friday, when the Bronchos open a three-game MIAA series against Southwest Baptist.
