UCO Falls At Kearney

KEARNEY, Neb. – The University of Central Oklahoma dropped its first Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association game of the season Saturday afternoon, 12-8, to Nebraska-Kearney at Memorial Field.

The Bronchos move to 9-6 overall on the season, and are 4-1 in league play. The teams will play the third and final game of the series Sunday at noon.

"I'm disappointed that after we fought back so hard to get the lead, we just gave it right back to them," UCO head coach John Martin said. "We need to be able to hold onto the lead, especially late. But we'll come back tomorrow and try to make it two of three. That's really a good thing on the road in this league."

JJ Rogers got the start Saturday for the Bronchos and allowed a solo home run on the second pitch of the game. He also gave up a double and two more homers in the bottom of the first inning and saw the Bronchos go down 4-0 just a few minutes into the game.

Central responded though, scoring four runs in the top of the second inning to tie the game. Xavier Freeman led off with a double, Caleb Peters walked, and Anthony Alvarez singled to load the bases with no outs.

After Taylor Avila popped out, Justin Brown singled on a bunt that scored Freeman. Jake Dyer then singled down the left field line to score Peters and Alvarez. Kyle Miskovsky added a sacrifice fly to center field that scored Alvarez and the game was tied 4-4.

Kearney went up again in the bottom half of the inning, 7-4. UCO continued to chip away though.

Avila doubled in the fourth, and Dyer brought him home with an RBI single to left field to make it 7-5. Paul Kropf led off the fifth with a single, and advanced to second on an error. Dayne Sommer then smacked an RBI double to left center and it was 7-6.

Now in the sixth, Brown led off getting hit by a pitch. After advancing to second on a wild pitch, Dyer drove him home to tie the game 7-7. Miskovsky then singled to center to score Dyer and give the Bronchos an 8-7 lead.

Rogers finished with just one inning pitched, four hits allowed and four runs, all earned. Gaylon Viney came on in relief in the second. He threw 3 2/3 innings, allowed three hits and three earned runs. Viney also walked six batters and had five strikeouts.

Landon Bond threw 1/3 of an inning and allowed one hit and two walks. Ben Wusterbarth relieved Bond in the bottom of the sixth with no outs and the bases loaded, then struck out the next three batters – all swinging – to get the Bronchos out of the jam and keep the 8-7 lead.

Wusterbarth would give up one run on the day, the game-tying eighth run in the bottom of the seventh. He finished with 1 2/3 and three strikeouts.

Junior Obeso came on for Wusterbarth in the seventh. He got out of the seventh, but to lead off the eighth, allowed a single and an RBI double that gave UNK a 9-8 lead. The Lopers added a sac-fly in the inning to go up 10-8. Then a two-run homer made it 12-8.

Central Oklahoma entered the game with a league-high 23 home runs. UCO hit five Friday, but did not hit a single ball out of the park Saturday.

Dyer led UCO at the plate Saturday. The senior outfielder went 3-for-5 with two doubles, four runs batted in, and two runs scored. Miskovksy went 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs and Brown went 2-for-3 with two runs scored.

Central Oklahoma and Nebraska-Kearney wrap up the three-game MIAA series Sunday. First pitch is scheduled for noon.
