Bronchos Drop Middle Match With Mules

EDMOND – The University of Central Oklahoma baseball team dropped the middle game of its Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association series with Central Missouri Saturday, falling 8-4 at Wendell Simmons Field.

The Bronchos and the Mules are once again tied atop the conference standings following the loss for UCO. Both teams are 12-3 in league play. The rubber match is scheduled for 1 p.m. Sunday.

"I think we did a good job hitting the ball today against some good Central Missouri pitchers," UCO head baseball coach John Martin said. "We had more hits than they did, and we had some line drives that should've been hits. But we left too many runners on base. We'd like to do better when we get double-digits hits in a game."

Central Oklahoma is 20-9 overall on the season after the loss. Central Missouri is 21-5.

Central Missouri struck first Saturday, and in a big way. The Mules, after striking out twice in the inning, got a runner on when Jake Dyer dropped a deep fly ball to right field. Mason Janvrin reached third on the play, then scored when Erik Webb hit a two-run home run of Broncho starter Gaylon Viney.

Central Missouri added three more with one swing of the bat when Justin Graff-Rowe hit the second home run of the inning to make it 5-0 Central Missouri.

The Bronchos did add two in the bottom half. Paul Kropf hit a two-out double to left center to score Kyle Miskovsky, who walked on the previous at bat. Dayne Sommer then singled to score Kropf and make it 5-2.

Central Missouri did some more damage in the fifth, scoring two more runs on no hits.

Viney's day was done after four innings. He left with the Bronchos still trailing 5-2, but with two runners on base under his responsibility.

Tabor Charles replaced Viney and threw 2/3 of an inning, walking three batters. Austin Lambright came on to replace Charles with the game now 7-2 Central Missouri.

Viney did strike out five on the day and only allowed three hits, all in the third inning.

UCO added one more in the bottom of the fifth when Kropf doubled again, this time scoring D.J. Gasso. Central Missouri added its final run in the top of the ninth.

UCO put up a bit of a fight in the final half inning. T.J. Sparr got a pinch-hit single, and Glenn Reeves got a pinch-hit double. Sparr scored when Miskovsky got an infield single that also moved Reeves to third. That made it 8-4. But the Bronchos struck out in their next two at bats, and Trae Smith grounded out to the second baseman to end the game.

Kropf finished the day 3-for-5 with two doubles and a single. He had two RBIs and a run scored on the day. No other Broncho had two hits though.

Lambright finished the game off for UCO, throwing 4 1/3 and striking out five while allowing just two hits and one run.

Central Oklahoma and Central Missouri have now split their last six meetings, 3-3.
