Bronchos Beat Kearney to Open Series

KEARNEY, Neb. – The University of Central Oklahoma baseball team returned to the win column with a 13-5 drubbing of Nebraska-Kearney Friday afternoon in the first of three Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association games at Memorial Field.

The Bronchos improved to 9-5 with the win and are now 4-0 in league play. Central came into Friday's game leading the MIAA in home runs with 18 on the season, through 13 games played. The Bronchos would hit five Friday.

"We got our bats going last weekend back home and were able to keep that going today," UCO head baseball coach John Martin said. "We had a bit of a hiccup in our midweek game, but today we got back to swinging the bats like we're capable of."

Every Broncho that stepped to the plate got a hit Friday, and seven of those nine batters recorded multiple hits. Anthony Alvarez led the way, going 4-for-5 with a two-run home run, a double, and an RBI single. UCO hit four doubles to go with those five homers.

Central wasted no time getting the offense going Friday. Jake Dyer singled on the first pitch of the game. He would be thrown out at second when Kyle Miskovsky hit into a fielder's choice. Miskovsky would steal second and later score on a Dayne Sommer single to right field to make it 1-0 UCO in the top of the first inning.

Caleb Peters smashed a grand slam in the top of the third inning, scoring Miskovsky, Paul Kropf, and Xavier Freeman to make it 5-1 Bronchos.  In the fourth, Miskovsky led off with a solo home run and Kropf followed with another to make it 7-1.

Nebraska-Kearney got back in the game with a four-run bottom of the fourth inning, but UCO kept going with the offense.

In the top of the fifth, UNK made a move on the mound, going with Brandon Brown. UCO had chased starter M. Robinson after four innings, 12 hits, and seven runs.

Taylor Avila was the first to see Brown. He smacked a 2-1 pitch to center field for the fourth homer of the day for the Bronchos. Alvarez made it five homers with his two-run shot in the sixth that made it 10-5. An Alvarez RBI single in the eighth scored Peters and made it 11-5.

UCO added two more in the top of the ninth. Dyer led off reaching on an error by the UNK shortstop, Miskovsky doubled, and Kropf hit a sacrifice-fly to score Dyer that made it 12-5. Freeman then doubled to score Miskovsky and make it 13-5.

Ryan Lemoine picked up the win Friday for the Bronchos, improving to 3-1 on the season in five starts. Lemoine threw seven innings, allowed eight hits and five runs. He also walked two and struck out three batters.

Josh Rutland came on ahead of the bottom of the eighth inning. He struck out two in the inning. Connor Sweeney came on to start the ninth inning, and loaded the bases with a pair of hits and a walk. UCO then went back to the bullpen and brought in Drake Harper, who went strikeout, pop-out, groundout to get out of the jam and send the Bronchos to victory.

UCO plays two more in Kearney. The teams meet again Saturday at 1 p.m. before wrapping up the series at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
