Bronchos Blast FHSU

HAYS, Kan. – The University of Central Oklahoma baseball team wrapped up a three-game Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association series Sunday afternoon, sweeping Fort Hays State with a 17-10 win in the third and final contest at Larks Park.

The Bronchos improved to 18-8 on the season with the win and earned its 10th conference win, moving to 10-2 in league games. Central also scored 17 runs for the second time in as many games and the fourth time in its last seven games.

"We were fortunate this weekend with the bats in our hands," UCO head baseball coach John Martin said. "We did well at the plate, and we needed to today. Fort Hays State came out swinging and we were able to withstand that and get the win. I'm proud of the whole team for getting a conference series sweep on the road. That's a big deal and they should all be proud of that."

Central fell behind in the first inning Sunday. Broncho starter JJ Rogers allowed four runs on five hits in the bottom of the first inning. He only threw 1 2/3 Sunday, finishing with four earned on seven hits before Tabor Charles replaced him in the second inning.

But UCO had his back. After trailing 4-0 after one, Central cut into the lead with a pair of runs in the top of the second, then burst out to an 8-4 lead after three.

In the second, Jake Dyer and D.J. Gasso scored. Dyer led off with a single and Gasso was hit by a pitch on the next at bat. Dyer scored on a wild pitch a few plays later, and Gasso scored when Anthony Alvarez grounded out to the Fort Hays State first baseman.

In the next inning, Paul Kropf hit a solo home run, his team-leading 11th of the season, to make it 4-3. Dayne Sommer, Xavier Freeman, Dyer and Gasso, and finally, Taylor Avila would all score in the inning as well to give the Bronchos an 8-4 lead after two.

Central would need the offense again though. Fort Hays State responded to UCO's six-run third inning with six runs of its own in the bottom of the fifth inning to take a 10-8 lead over the Bronchos.

UCO needed another outburst and it got it in the next inning. The Bronchos hung a six on the scoreboard for the second time Sunday afternoon with a six-run top of the sixth inning to go up 14-10 over the Tigers.

Justin Brown led off with a single and later scored on a wild pitch. Kyle Miskovsky singled too, and he scored on a bases loaded walk to tie the game 10-10. Gasso then smacked a three-RBI triple through the right side to score Kropf, Sommer, and Dyer and give the Bronchos a three-run lead. Avila scored Gasso on the next at bat with an RBI single that made it 14-10 Bronchos.

Brown led off again in the seventh, and earned a hit again with a triple to right field. He scored when Miskovksy hit a sacrifice-fly and gave UCO a 15-10 lead.  The Bronchos added two more in the eighth on a home run from Avila that scored Gasso and gave Central a 17-10 lead.

Josh Rutland threw the final two innings to keep Fort Hays State at 10 on the scoreboard and get the Bronchos to a fifth-straight win.

UCO scattered 15 hits Sunday. Sommer led the way with a 3-for-5 day. Miskovsky, Dyer, Gasso, and Avila each had two hits. Gasso, who only returned from injury this weekend, went 2-for-3 with four runs scored and three runs batted in.

Central Oklahoma has one more road game in its four-game trip. The Bronchos play at Missouri Southern in an MIAA contest in Joplin, Mo. on Tuesday. UCO is aiming to avenge a non-conference loss to MSSU earlier this season. The Bronchos return home following Wednesday's game to host Central Missouri next weekend.
