Bronchos Open Outdoor Season

WINFIELD, Kan. – The University of Central Oklahoma track & field team opened the 2018 outdoor season Thursday with the Southwestern Kansas Invitational, and a trio of Bronchos earned first-place honors to lead the way.

Abena Sey took first place in the high jump with a 1.76-meter mark that cleared the competition and set a new meet record. Sey hit a NCAA Division II provisional mark with the jump, which also stands as the highest mark in the country through the early part of the season. Her 5-feet, 9 1/4-inch jump nearly broke the UCO school record set by former Broncho and three-time outdoor All-American Lacey Rhodes.

"Abena keeps working hard to get better and you can tell after today that she is getting better," UCO head track & field coach Martha Brennan said. "This is her first collegiate outdoor meet, she's just a freshman, and she did very well considering she competed in so many other events too."

Sey also took sixth in the 100-meter hurdles. She competed in the 200-meter dash and shot put as well.

Kaite Cease also raced to a first-place finish Thursday. The senior ran the 800 in 2:20.65. Skylar Standokes, another freshman, took first place in the long jump with a 5.61m mark.

Central Oklahoma's outdoor season is underway. The Bronchos will compete next at the Oklahoma Baptist Invitational on Saturday, March 31.
