Bronchos Beat SNU

BETHANY, Okla. – The University of Central Oklahoma baseball team beat Southern Nazarene 8-4 Tuesday afternoon at Feland Field in a non-conference battle between nearby foes.

"Today was a good win for us," UCO head baseball coach John Martin said. "We played pretty well in a few different areas and that's what you like to see. To get some good pitching and some good hitting, we made some good plays in the field too, those are good signs and we need to keep that going."

Kyle Miskovsky, Paul Kropf, and Dayne Sommer (the first three UCO batters in the lineup) each had two hits Tuesday. The trio combined to go 6-for-17 with two runs scored and two runs batted in. Jake Dyer and Xavier Freeman also had two hits for the Bronchos. UCO scattered 13 hits on the day.

Central scored first Tuesday afternoon. Miskovsky led off the game with a single through the left side. After stealing second, and advancing to third on a Kropf sacrifice-fly, Miskovsky scored on a Sommer ground-out to give the Bronchos an early 1-0 lead.

After SNU evened the game 1-1 in the bottom half of the inning, Dyer led off the second with a single to extend his hit streak to 18 games. He scored when Anthony Alvarez singled to left, giving UCO a 2-1 lead.

SNU went up 3-2 in the bottom of the second. UCO again responded though.

Freeman led off with a double to left field. He moved over to third on a sac-bunt from Alvarez, and then scored on a wild pitch to tie the game at three.

Tyler Culver got the start for the Bronchos Tuesday, and threw 4 2/3 innings. He allowed three earned on five hits and struck out five in his sixth start of the season. Connor Sweeney replaced Culver in the fifth and got a quick out to get out of the inning.

The Bronchos gave Sweeney some run support in the sixth. Alvarez drew a walk to lead off the inning, and advanced to second on a throwing error by the pitcher on a failed pickoff attempt. Alvarez scored on a single by Miskovsky, who then scored unearned on a Kropf single when the left fielder made an error fielding the ball. That made it 5-3 Bronchos.

Sweeney came back for the sixth and got a 1-2-3 inning. He then got even more run support in the top of the seventh.

Freeman led off with a single, and scored two batters later on a Bryant Klusener single. Justin Brown pinch-ran for Klusener, and advanced to third on a fielder's choice when Miskovsky hit a groundball to the SNU shortstop. He scored when Miskovsky stole second and the SNU catcher made a thrown into center field. Brown's run made it 7-3, UCO.

After another 1-2-3 inning by Sweeney in the bottom of the seventh, Trae Smith scored on a sac-fly by Xavier Freeman in the eighth to make it 8-3, Bronchos.

Sweeney kept going strong through the bottom of the eighth. He reached eight-straight outs before giving up his first hit on a routine fly ball that Sparr lost in the sun. He got out of the inning unscathed though with back-to-back strikeouts – both looking.

Sweeney's day was done after 3 1/3 innings. He allowed one hit and struck out three. He didn't issue a single walk too.

Drake Harper came on to close in the ninth. SNU scored one in the inning on a two-out error by Freeman in left field. Harper kept it there though and sent the Bronchos to their 14th win of the season.

UCO is back in action Wednesday. The Bronchos host Southwestern Oklahoma State on Wednesday afternoon at Wendell Simmons Field.
