Central Run-Rules Southwestern

EDMOND – The University of Central Oklahoma baseball team run-ruled its opponent for the fifth time this season, beating Southwestern Oklahoma State 17-7 in eight innings Wednesday afternoon in a non-conference matchup at Wendell Simmons Field.

The Bronchos, who have scored 17 runs twice in the last five days, scored in each of the first five innings. UCO scored six runs in both the second and the fourth innings. Anthony Alvarez scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the eighth to win the game for Central Oklahoma.

"Overall, I'm happy with the win," UCO head coach John Martin said. "We've still got plenty to work on though. Pitching started out rough again and we need to correct that. But we were able to get some really good bullpen relief, and it's always good to see the offense clicking the way it did today. We scored in a few different ways and that's a good thing."

The Bronchos racked up 14 hits Wednesday, with eight different players getting one base-knock each. Five of those players had multi-hit games, led by Xavier Freeman's 3-for-4 day at the plate.

Kyle Miskovsky, Paul Kropf, Jake Dyer, and Justin Brown each had two hits.

Dyer extended a career-best hit streak to 19 games with a first inning, two-out single to right field. That followed a two-run homer by Dayne Sommer that flew 400 feet to center field. After giving up five Southwestern runs in the top of the first inning, Central trailed 5-2 after one thanks to Sommer.

Starter Landon Bond earned a quick 1-2-3 inning in the second and a little momentum for his offense.

Kropf smacked a two-RBI double to left field that scored Brown and Miskovksy to make it 5-4. Trae Smith reached on an error by the second baseman later in the inning and Kropf scored on the play to tie it 5-5. Then Dyer blasted a three-run homer to left center to give the Bronchos the 8-5 go-ahead lead.

After SWOSU got one back in the top of the third – a first-pitch solo home run off Gaylon Viney, Freeman hit a solo shot in the bottom half to make it 9-6.

The Bronchos then rallied again after Will Olds a run in the top of the fourth to make it 9-7. UCO sent 10 batters to the plate in the bottom half of the fourth, the second time in four innings the Bronchos batted at least around in the order.

Sommer walked to lead off the inning, and Smith followed with a single down the right field line to move Sommer over to third. On a stolen base attempt by Smith, the ball bounced off the UCO senior's leg and darted out to shallow left field. Sommer scored easily, and Smith jumped to his feet, darted to third and all the way home before Southwestern could recover on the play. That made it 11-7 UCO.

After Dyer struck out, Alvarez did too, but he reached on a passed ball. Freeman then doubled to left center to score Alvarez.

Peters flied out to right in the next at-bat and moved Freeman over to third. Then Brown smacked a shot to the outfield to score Freeman and make it 13-7. Miskvosky was hit by a pitch on the next at bat, and Kropf followed with a powerful two-RBI double to right center to make it 15-7 Bronchos.

Alvarez would score in the bottom of the fifth on a double steal. Freeman took off for second and the throw ended up in center field. Alvarez broke for home ahead of the throw though and gets credit for the steal and putting UCO up 16-7.

After the Bronchos only two scoreless innings in the sixth and seventh respectively, Alvarez led off the eighth reaching on an error by the shortstop. He moved to second on the throw, and moved to third on a fielder's choice from Brown – SWOSU got pinch-hitter Bryce West out at second on the play. Alvarez scored on the next play as the pitch got past the Southwestern catcher and sent the Bronchos to the 17-7 win as he crossed home plate.

Kropf led the Bronchos with four RBIs on the day. Dyer had three. Freeman's had two with two swings of the bat.

Bond finished with two innings pitched and a no decision. Viney threw one inning and struck out one, while Olds threw 1 1/3.

Junior Obeso earned the win on the day, throwing 1 2/3 and striking out three batters for five of his outs. Austin Lambright and Ben Wusterbarth also threw one inning apiece.

Central Oklahoma is done with non-conference play following Wednesday's win. UCO finished that portion of its schedule 8-6. The Bronchos hit the road for Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association action this weekend. UCO plays at Fort Hays State beginning Friday at 5 p.m. The two schools will also play Saturday and Sunday in MIAA action.
