Bronchos Drop Series Finale With Southwest Baptist

EDMOND – The University of Central Oklahoma baseball team dropped a 4-0 decision to Southwest Baptist Sunday afternoon in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association series finale at Wendell Simmons Field.

The Bronchos are 13-8 on the season following the loss, and 7-2 in MIAA play. SBU, which Central beat both Friday and Saturday, is 7-13 overall and 2-7 in league play.

"We just struck out too much," UCO head baseball coach John Martin said. "We strike out 11 times and only have six base runners today. That's not acceptable for us. We are so much better than that and we have to play better. I don't think giving up four runs is so bad, they scored five and seven in the first two games. We just couldn't hit the ball today."

Martin saw seven of his 10 batters strikeout Sunday. Central hit double digits in strikeouts for the 10th time this season. UCO is 5-5 in such instances.

Only Jake Dyer, Paul Kropf, and T.J. Sparr recorded a hit Sunday for Central's offense. The Bronchos in two prior games against Southwest Baptist had 23 hits and scored 25 runs, including 17 in a run-rule win on Saturday afternoon.

Dyer extended his hitting streak to 17 games in the first at bat of the game Sunday. He slapped a 1-1 pitch through the right side of the infield. After stealing second, he advanced to third on a single from Kropf.

But both were left on base, and Sparr wouldn't get UCO's third and final hit until the seventh inning.

JJ Rogers started Sunday for the Bronchos. The junior righty threw 4 2/3 innings, allowing seven hits and two runs. He struck out three and walked two. Rogers is 3-1 on the season after what was his sixth start.

Junior Obeso threw 1/3 of an inning of relief work. He was solid against the one batter he faced in the fifth. He allowed two runs off two walks though in the sixth before Martin went to the bullpen.

Ben Wusterbarth threw three solid innings, striking out four and allowing just one hit. Austin Lambright threw the ninth, striking out one in finishing off the game for the Bronchos.

Central Oklahoma has a pair of mid-week non-conference games next. The Bronchos will make the short trek to Bethany, Okla. to take on Southern Nazarene on Tuesday afternoon before hosting Southwestern Oklahoma State on Wednesday afternoon.

Central hits the road for a weekend MIAA series at Fort Hays State beginning Friday.
